Historic Durham County Landmark – Hardscrabble

Constructed as two separate houses for two different families, William and Elizabeth Clenny (Georgian section, ca. 1775) and James Cain and his son John
(Federal section, ca. 1790’s), the home was seamed together around 1888 by a descendant of James Cain.
The standing of the Hardscrabble families is evident in the original home’s fine stone foundation, double shouldered chimneys featuring Flemish bond brickwork with glazed headers, molded architraves and sills, and nine-over-nine windows. Though simpler in design, the second home has distinctive single story chimneys with glazed brick, one in an interesting diamond pattern. The interiors of both sections feature finely detailed interior woodwork and elegant mantels and wainscot. Download PDF for more information.
